v
sounds like "f"
In German, the letter v is pronounced like "f". So "Vater" sounds like "Fater", and "viel" sounds like "feel".
Tip
This is the most common trap for beginners. When you see a v in German, don't say it like the English "v" — say "f" instead. You already know the "f" sound perfectly, you just need to remember that German spells it with a "v" too.

Same sound as "f" in these words

English

English
