When a German word starts with "sp", it is pronounced "shp" — the "s" becomes a "sh" sound.
Same rule as "st"
This is the exact same rule as the "st" sound: when "sp" appears at the beginning of a word or syllable, the "s" becomes "sh". In the middle of a word (like "Wespe"), it stays as a normal "sp". Think: sp at the start = shp.
How it works
English
shoe
the "sh" sound you already know
Hindi
shaam
same "sh" as in “shaam” (evening)
Visual
sh + p = shp
just add "p" after the "sh" sound
